Direct Cremation

There is a great deal of publicity surrounding “Direct Cremation “on TV and on social media.

Our concern is that a lot of people think it is a regular funeral service at a local crematorium, unfortunately it is not. What is being offered is a “Direct Unattended Cremation”.

Direct cremation has effectively come about initially due to the Covid pandemic when gatherings of family and friends were not allowed.

More latterly direct cremation has gained a degree of popularity due to the cost of a traditional funeral service.

It should be noted that direct cremation is a very basic funeral service with limited services available and as such it is therefore not appropriate for everyone.

We should not underestimate the psychological benefit of some form of funeral service, a time to mourn, a time to say goodbye.

Just like a wedding or a christening a funeral service is a time for family and friends to come together and support each other.

There are several crematoria throughout the country who offer the service of a direct unattended cremation; some are in the south of the country.

Some, more local to us, offer a direct service and allow a limited number of mourners to attend the crematorium for a short period of time for quiet reflection but without a minister / celebrant.

The following price is for unattended or attended cremation only and include our services, a simple coffin, doctors fees (where applicable) and cremation fees.

Should you wish for an alternative please ask us, we are always available for advice.

Prices are for Durham or Wear Valley Crematorium; other crematorium prices are available upon request.
